About Chinese Name Lab
Chinese Name Lab is a small, independent project that generates and checks Chinese names. It is built and maintained by a native Mandarin speaker, and every name runs through a transparent, rule-based naturalness check — not a black box, and not random characters.
Who is behind this
Chinese Name Lab is an independent project, not a large company, so the team details are kept light. The part that matters for trust is simple: the naming library and the scoring rules behind it are built and reviewed by a native Mandarin speaker. That is the whole reason the names are meant to read naturally to a Chinese ear, rather than being valid characters strung together.
How names are generated
Names come from two layers. First, a hand-curated library of names reviewed by a native speaker and tagged by gender, style, and use. When the curated set runs out for the filters you pick, a second layer combines vetted characters using common Chinese naming patterns. Everything from that second layer still has to clear the same quality bar before it is shown.
The example names on every page are produced by this same engine at build time, with a fixed seed — so they are stable, indexable, and exactly what the tool outputs, not hand-written marketing copy.
How the naturalness score works
Each name gets a score from 0 to 100. It starts at 100 and loses points for anything that would make it read oddly, across several independent checks:
- Meaning — what the characters express together.
- Gender impression — whether the name reads consistently masculine, feminine, or neutral.
- Pronunciation and tone flow — whether the tones flow or clash — a run of identical tones sounds flat.
- Style — whether the characters hold together as one coherent style instead of a random mix.
- Awkward sounds — syllables that echo an everyday or unlucky word, plus rare characters nobody would use in a name.
- Negative characters — screening out characters with poor meanings.
- Surname fit — how the given name sits with the family name it is paired with.
- Refined character use — favoring clean, usable characters over showy or clumsy ones.
Every name shows its own breakdown, so you can see why it scored what it did rather than trusting a single number.
What this is not
These names are suggestions, not professional, cultural, or legal advice. Pinyin and meanings are approximate, and no name is guaranteed to be unique or cleared for trademarks or official registration. Before using a name for a real person, a baby, or a brand, confirm it with a native Mandarin speaker — taste and connotation shift by region and over time.
